Donald and Margies Berry Orchard

One of my favorite summer activities was picking blackberries at a friends blackberry orchard. We would load up with old gallon buckets and off we would head to the orchard. Donald would drive me out in his old golf cart and point me in the direction of the most beautiful black berries I had ever seen. I could pick a gallon of berries just about at one bush they we soooooooo big and so many on each bush. He kept everthing well trimed and clean so you could be there and not have to worry snakes.

Donald would always say eat all you want and belive me  I could eat until I was sick but never did, any way he placed milk creats for us to sit on and we would just visit and pick berries.  There was something so relaxing about being out in nature and enjoying the company of such sweet people. I could spent hours there, for me it was therapy and a reminder of younger days spent with my grandmother picking berries out in the wild..we would talk about making  jellies and jams and the cobblers we would make, those were good times.

Donald and Margie passed a few years ago but I still have the memories of the talks and the peaceful, quiet moments we shared in the berry orchard. They are in my heart and will be a big part of my memories for many years to come.

My memories along these lines are sitting in a garden in Michigan picking and eating green beans like they were french fries. God they were good. Also, when my grandmother died, the first thought that went through my mind was, “No more molasses cookies”. She would have liked that. I got the impression that Donald would have liked to be remembered for his blackberries. Nice story.

Oh I love blackberries. Where I live in North England they grow wild down the lanes and hedgerows, but rarely so large and juicy as your friend’s were. When I was a kid my mum used to make pies, tarts, crumbles and jams. In more recent years I have made homebrew blackberry wine, which I delicious if you resist drinking it for a year or so 🙂

We used to have a huge blackberry bush in our backyard in New York and every year I would make blackberry crumble pie. Mmmmmm.

We tried planting blackberries out here in California but the ground squirrels and bunnies eat them all!
